What Do I Do If I Am Stuck in My Relationship?


In 2020, a Family Relations study of people in relationships revealed that a lot of them felt stuck. A survey of the participants’ interviews showed that over a third of them felt some constraint holding them to the relationship, even if they weren’t sure they wanted to be in it anymore.

If you’re feeling the same, you can take action to determine if you should give the relationship another try or if you should walk away from it. To help with that, here are a few helpful tips!

4 Things to Do If You Feel Stuck in Your Relationship

1. Reassess the relationship

Once you acknowledge that “stuck” is how you’re feeling, the first thing you should do is reassess the relationship. This will help you identify the issues that have been affecting it so you can determine if they can be fixed.
Ask yourself if the relationship has changed and in what ways. Additionally, determine if the relationship allows you to be yourself. It’s also not a bad idea to make a list of reasons why you should stay and why you should leave; it could be surprisingly revealing.

2. Have a heart-to-heart talk

If you find that there are more pros than cons on your list, you should consider working on your relationship. Most issues can be solved if both parties are willing to do the work together. So, have a heart-to-heart with your partner.
Explain how you’ve been feeling in the relationship but also make it clear that you think things could improve. If your partner has been secretly feeling the same as you, this will be a good opportunity to come clean and explain how they’ve been feeling as well.

3. Reconnect with yourself

When you’ve been with someone long enough, it’s not uncommon to merge with that person to a certain extent. However, that means that you lose yourself a little in the process because you lose touch with the things that make you an individual.
If you’re feeling stuck, this could be the reason why. In that case, reconnecting with yourself has been long overdue. Focus on self-development and start doing more things for yourself and on your own. Reconnect with friends, take up an old hobby or a new one, focus more on your career, etc.

 4. Leave the relationship

Sometimes, it doesn’t matter how hard you work on the relationship. If your heart is no longer in it or if your list of cons is longer than the pros, you won’t stop feeling stuck until you leave.
Relationships often run their course because people change quite a lot over time. If you want out, that’s nothing to feel guilty about. Ultimately, you’re doing yourself and your partner a favor because you both deserve better than feeling stuck.
